Measurement of 139La(p,x) cross sections from 35–60 MeV by stacked-target activation
A stacked-target of natural lanthanum foils (99.9119% 139La) was irradiated using a 60 MeV proton beam at the LBNL 88-Inch Cyclotron. 139La(p,x) cross sections are reported between 35–60 MeV for nine product radionuclides. The primary motivation for this measurement was the need to quantify the production of 134Ce. As a positron-emitting analogue of the promising medical radionuclide 225Ac, 134Ce is desirable for in vivo applications of bio-distribution assays for this emerging radio-pharmaceutical. The results of this measurement were compared to the nuclear model codes TALYS, EMPIRE and ALICE (using default parameters), which showed significant deviation from the measured values
CacheZoom: How SGX Amplifies The Power of Cache Attacks
In modern computing environments, hardware resources are commonly shared, and
parallel computation is widely used. Parallel tasks can cause privacy and
security problems if proper isolation is not enforced. Intel proposed SGX to
create a trusted execution environment within the processor. SGX relies on the
hardware, and claims runtime protection even if the OS and other software
components are malicious. However, SGX disregards side-channel attacks. We
introduce a powerful cache side-channel attack that provides system adversaries
a high resolution channel. Our attack tool named CacheZoom is able to virtually
track all memory accesses of SGX enclaves with high spatial and temporal
precision. As proof of concept, we demonstrate AES key recovery attacks on
commonly used implementations including those that were believed to be
resistant in previous scenarios. Our results show that SGX cannot protect
critical data sensitive computations, and efficient AES key recovery is
possible in a practical environment. In contrast to previous works which
require hundreds of measurements, this is the first cache side-channel attack
on a real system that can recover AES keys with a minimal number of
measurements. We can successfully recover AES keys from T-Table based

Evaluation of the influence of kyphosis and scoliosis on intervertebral disc extrusion in French bulldogs
Although thoracic vertebral malformations with kyphosis and scoliosis are often considered incidental findings on diagnostic imaging studies of screw-tailed brachycephalic breeds, they have been suggested to interfere with spinal biomechanics and intervertebral disc degeneration. It is however unknown if an abnormal spinal curvature also predisposes dogs to develop clinically relevant intervertebral disc herniations. The aim of this study was to evaluate if the occurrence of thoracic vertebral malformations, kyphosis or scoliosis would be associated with a higher prevalence of cervical or thoracolumbar intervertebral disc extrusion in French bulldogs
HIV prevalence and undiagnosed infection among a community sample of gay and bisexual men in Scotland, 2005-2011: implications for HIV testing policy and prevention
<b>Objective</b><p></p>
To examine HIV prevalence, HIV testing behaviour, undiagnosed infection and risk factors for HIV positivity among a community sample of gay men in Scotland.<p></p>
<b>Methods</b><p></p>
Cross-sectional survey of gay and bisexual men attending commercial gay venues in Glasgow and Edinburgh, Scotland with voluntary anonymous HIV testing of oral fluid samples in 2011. A response rate of 65.2% was achieved (1515 participants).<p></p>
<b>Results</b><p></p>
HIV prevalence (4.8%, 95% confidence interval, CI 3.8% to 6.2%) remained stable compared to previous survey years (2005 and 2008) and the proportion of undiagnosed infection among HIV-positive men (25.4%) remained similar to that recorded in 2008. Half of the participants who provided an oral fluid sample stated that they had had an HIV test in the previous 12 months; this proportion is significantly higher when compared to previous study years (50.7% versus 33.8% in 2005, p<0.001). Older age (>25 years) was associated with HIV positivity (1.8% in those <25 versus 6.4% in older ages group) as was a sexually transmitted infection (STI) diagnosis within the previous 12 months (adjusted odds ratio 2.13, 95% CI 1.09–4.14). There was no significant association between age and having an STI or age and any of the sexual behaviours recorded.<p></p>
<b>Conclusion</b><p></p>
HIV transmission continues to occur among gay and bisexual men in Scotland. Despite evidence of recent testing within the previous six months, suggesting a willingness to test, the current opt-out policy may have reached its limit with regards to maximising HIV test uptake. Novel strategies are required to improve regular testing opportunities and more frequent testing as there are implications for the use of other biomedical HIV interventions.<p></p>
Identification of sex hormone-binding globulin in the human hypothalamus
Gonadal steroids are known to influence hypothalamic functions through both genomic and non-genomic pathways. Sex hormone-binding globulin ( SHBG) may act by a non-genomic mechanism independent of classical steroid receptors. Here we describe the immunocytochemical mapping of SHBG-containing neurons and nerve fibers in the human hypothalamus and infundibulum. Mass spectrometry and Western blot analysis were also used to characterize the biochemical characteristics of SHBG in the hypothalamus and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of humans. SHBG-immunoreactive neurons were observed in the supraoptic nucleus, the suprachiasmatic nucleus, the bed nucleus of the stria terminalis, paraventricular nucleus, arcuate nucleus, the perifornical region and the medial preoptic area in human brains. There were SHBG-immunoreactive axons in the median eminence and the infundibulum. A partial colocalization with oxytocin could be observed in the posterior pituitary lobe in consecutive semithin sections. We also found strong immunoreactivity for SHBG in epithelial cells of the choroid plexus and in a portion of the ependymal cells lining the third ventricle. Mass spectrometry showed that affinity-purified SHBG from the hypothalamus and choroid plexus is structurally similar to the SHBG identified in the CSF. The multiple localizations of SHBG suggest neurohypophyseal and neuroendocrine functions. The biochemical data suggest that CSF SHBG is of brain rather than blood origin. Copyright (c) 2005 S. Functional equations from generating functions: a novel approach to deriving identities for the Bernstein basis functions
The main aim of this paper is to provide a novel approach to deriving
identities for the Bernstein polynomials using functional equations. We derive
various functional equations and differential equations using generating
functions. Applying these equations, we give new proofs for some standard
identities for the Bernstein basis functions, including formulas for sums,
alternating sums, recursion, subdivision, degree raising, differentiation and a
formula for the monomials in terms of the Bernstein basis functions. We also
derive many new identities for the Bernstein basis functions based on this
approach. Moreover, by applying the Laplace transform to the generating
functions for the Bernstein basis functions, we obtain some interesting series
representations for the Bernstein basis functions.Comment: 1
Detection of weak gravitational lensing distortions of distant galaxies by cosmic dark matter at large scales
Most of the matter in the universe is not luminous and can be observed
directly only through its gravitational effect. An emerging technique called
weak gravitational lensing uses background galaxies to reveal the foreground
dark matter distribution on large scales. Light from very distant galaxies
travels to us through many intervening overdensities which gravitationally
distort their apparent shapes. The observed ellipticity pattern of these
distant galaxies thus encodes information about the large-scale structure of
the universe, but attempts to measure this effect have been inconclusive due to
systematic errors. We report the first detection of this ``cosmic shear'' using
145,000 background galaxies to reveal the dark matter distribution on angular
scales up to half a degree in three separate lines of sight. The observed
angular dependence of this effect is consistent with that predicted by two
leading cosmological models, providing new and independent support for these

A single low-energy, iron-poor supernova as the source of metals in the star SMSS J 031300.36-670839.3
The element abundance ratios of four low-mass stars with extremely low
metallicities indicate that the gas out of which the stars formed was enriched
in each case by at most a few, and potentially only one low-energy, supernova.
Such supernovae yield large quantities of light elements such as carbon but
very little iron. The dominance of low-energy supernovae is surprising, because
it has been expected that the first stars were extremely massive, and that they
disintegrated in pair-instability explosions that would rapidly enrich galaxies
in iron. What has remained unclear is the yield of iron from the first
supernovae, because hitherto no star is unambiguously interpreted as
encapsulating the yield of a single supernova. Here we report the optical
spectrum of SMSS J031300.36- 670839.3, which shows no evidence of iron (with an
upper limit of 10^-7.1 times solar abundance). Based on a comparison of its
abundance pattern with those of models, we conclude that the star was seeded
with material from a single supernova with an original mass of ~60 Mo (and that
the supernova left behind a black hole). Taken together with the previously
mentioned low-metallicity stars, we conclude that low-energy supernovae were
common in the early Universe, and that such supernovae yield light element
enrichment with insignificant iron. Reduced stellar feedback both chemically
and mechanically from low-energy supernovae would have enabled first-generation
stars to form over an extended period. We speculate that such stars may perhaps
have had an important role in the epoch of cosmic reionization and the chemical
